Subject: [LarrysList] Launching of Weather balloons from Forest Park as part of a NASA ozone research program

Weather balloons will be launched from Forest Park in St. Louis, MO as part of a NASA ozone research program. The project involves launching balloons containing ozone monitoring equipment and the follow-up recovery of the equipment packages that is attached to the balloons.

The launches should start August 8 and continue through mid-to-late September; until 34 are released. The exact dates will be determined according to a NASA schedule for the mission they are are supporting, but it is anticipated that 6 or 7 will be launched weekly until they have no more. Launches will always be at approximately 2:00 p. m., to coordinate with a satellite overpass.

Following the launch of the balloons local residents might find weather instruments on their property that had been attached on the high altitude weather balloons. These packages are part of an experiment that NASA is conducting in August and September. The packages are harmless, and can be returned to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a reward.
